We live in a world where more and more people simply do not give a shit about one another. It is popular to be involved with causes, and this is important. But nobody wants to be bothered with the suffering of individuals. If someone feels alone and hurt, we tell them to suck it up and stop whining. We are either too busy to be able to care or too self-absorbed to bother caring.
I believe that more people than ever feel lonely and isolated to a degree. The Internet connects us more than ever on one hand, but it does not connect us at a heart level. I am not saying to give your all to every single person you meet--some people will take advantage of that and make your life miserable. What I am saying is, if you see someone hurting, perhaps you could take a moment to extend yourself just a little and say "yes, I see that you are hurting and I care" without telling them to suck it up. It could make a world of difference.
